Service Learning Projects

The AIDS Project

Target Students:

This project involves developing different lesson plans and would be a wonderful experience for those students interested in education. The AIDS Project is interested in non-traditional education, so students who are creative and have ideas about fun activities/videos/role-playing should consider being part of this project.

Project Summary:

This service project involves students helping to develop an educational awareness program that focuses on HIV prevention by increasing student knowledge about HIV. Students will work with their service learning liaison to discover what educational strategies will work best for taking this message to a variety of high school students.  Students will develop an AIDS/HIV prevention curriculum that they will then teach at local area high schools.

Planned Parenthood of Susquehanna Valley

Target Students:

This is an excellent opportunity for students who are outgoing and interested in outreach.  Students will take their campaign into the downtown area of State College and will present it to the general public.

Students will learn how to facilitate a group discussion before taking the project to the public.

Voices 4 Choice

Project Summary:

For this project, students will work with the staff at the WRC to organize a fundraiser for the WRC.  The Center has an annual 5K run/walk, and students will be responsible for publicizing the event as well as helping during the run/walk.  Students should plan on developing a publicity strategy and will implement their publicity campaign in the weeks before the event.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Allies (LGBTA)

Target Students:

Students interested in working collectively to develop an advertising campaign would enjoy this project.  Choosing to work with LGBTA is an acknowledgement that you are aware of the complex and often sensitive environment surrounding alternative sexualities and are willing to work toward eliminating issues of homophobia.

Project Summary:

This project involves a variety of outreach activities to increase awareness of the LGBTA and to educate students about the various events sponsored by the LGBTA. In particular, students will table in the HUB as well as help with outreach and publicity for the upcoming LGBTA lectures and film series.  In addition to attending these events, students will announce these events in other Women's Studies courses.

Nittany Middle School and at the "Spring Festival" at Mt. Nittany Middle School.  The group is free to develop the content and presentation of their booth, but the presentation should attempt to incorporate some aspect of gender into the presentation.  (Ex- famous women in science)
